The Room is the Resonator, The Old Police Station, Deptford, 23 September - 2 October 2016

After projects present a ten-day exhibition by artists, Paul Abbott and Alex Roberts.  Part of Deptford X Fringe and Art Licks Weekend Festivals.

The Room is the Resonator explores themes centred on memory, nostalgia and perception to form an exhibition in the unique context of the former cells and interrogation room of The Old Police Station in Deptford.

Mindful of Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space and his characterisation of dwelling and space, while simultaneously considering Lacan’s representation of the ‘real’, the exhibition considers the desire of one to leave and ‘remake’ a reality, whatever that may signify.

The separate cells and interrogation room will house occurrences in relation to the two artists modes of practice: Roberts working primarily with paint and Abbott working with video but both sharing a keen interest in responding to the specificity of the given location.

How might narrative threads be made and frustrated?; How might ‘blind alleys’ allude to or corrupt a message?; Can a mirror be held to the theatrical space of the installation- its performativity - implicating the spectator in that conversation?

August Awards - Arts Council England & the British Council bestow a grant!

THE RED MANSION ART PRIZE 2016 - the shortlist is announced

The Red Mansion Art Prize 2016, The Red Mansion Foundation 

- Alex Roberts is shortlisted (MAY 2016).

The Red Mansion Art Prize was established in 2002 to promote artistic exchange between China and the UK. Each year one student is selected from each of seven of the UK’s foremost art colleges: The Royal Academy Schools, The Royal College of Art, Chelsea College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Slade School of Fine Art, Goldsmiths College, and the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art.

During the summer of 2016, the talented winners of the Red Mansion Art Prize will travel to China for one month. They will be provided with studio space and the opportunity to live and work alongside local artists with flights, accommodation and a spending allowance provided for them.

An exhibition of the works produced by the students over this time will be held in Spring 2017.

Drawing Projects UK - The Figure: Drawing from Life - Re-looking and Reconnecting, May & July 2016.

Weekend drawing sessions... 2 - 3 July 2016 will host another weekend of life drawing with artist Alex Roberts - Analysis of the figure within space, observing human activity by investigating the surrounding location.

Following on from the first weekend in May (Reviewing the Model), Alex will lead another two-day drawing session that explores the human form through drawing. The session is tailored to all levels of ability and offers the opportunity to build confidence and to develop and enhance skills through working from observation. A plethora of techniques will be deployed to explore form, shape, proportion and to develop a personal approach to respond to, and re-view, the model.

The Drawing Sessions organised by Drawing Projects UK are suitable for adults who wish to test and develop their approaches to drawing through participation in artist-led projects in our dedicated facilities with small group sizes.

Participants can join this session for either Saturday or Sunday (11am-4pm) or for the full weekend. Some materials and refreshments will be provided.
