The Visitors, 2015

The launch of the evolving exhibition coincides with Art Weekender - Bristol & Bath

An arranged set of paintings opens the conversation, complete with conscious, empty pauses.  November will witness the arrival of two new works - subtly transforming the show and adding to the dialogue over the next three months.

Art Weekender - Bristol & Bath

Choices seeks to explore the associations between the artwork, the viewer and the artist within the location setting, the latter context being a ‘gallery, display space’ at The Edge, University of Bath.

With our present, fleeting, selfie-obsessed, virtual-curated society we are often left questioning, who are we? Who are they? How do others know us or we others? Are we who we say we are? What’s next? Questions are set against our news coverage backdrop of constant suffering images and reports, from a world seemingly detached from the simplicity of human closeness and reverence of life, why?

Choices pursues to reveal what remains dormant, under-exposed, unresolved, or not given time for reflection within us, and amongst our momentary culture. A collection of works that address the concerns of mid-encounters, decision-making, transitory states and contrasting human conditions, that often reside side by side via the intimate and immediate medium of paint.

The premise of this exhibition proposes a chain of perspectives that challenges the artwork’s subject, the viewer, the artist, and the resonance that follows.

Alongside her practice Alex Roberts delivers painting and life drawing classes for ICIA and the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, University of Bath.

  1. Last month, I was in an exhibition gallery and met an esasy writer there who had a project of giving words to the paintings but after a complete conversation with him I came to the point that we will have to think like the painter if we want to elaborate his work and we will have to jump into the show of other.
